Our goal is to have this form of communication be your gateway to knowledge about the NAACP's position on various topical issues facing our community; update you on our activities, and give you a way to get involved.
- It is a very busy time at the Milwaukee Branch NAACP; all committees are actively engaged in carrying out the mission of the NAACP. We held a Political Action Forum on February 2, 2008, before a standing room only crowd. Most local, county and state candidates were on hand to compete for vote and inform attendees of their vision for a better future. The forum was sponsored by Political Action Committees of the Branch Youth Council and College Chapter.
- We will sponsor a Summer Program again this year. We have sponsored a vital program for the past three years for nearly sixty young people ages 6 through 18. The program consists of academic enrichment, recreation, socialization, motivation and inspiration, financial planning and public speaking. A great emphasis was on healthy living. Students make choices of special interest projects. Overall student were happy and had fun learning. They were involved in civil rights advocacy training, voter registration, juvenile justice projects and more.
- We are highly anticipating attending the 2008 NAACP National Convention in Cincinnati, OH. They have been making plans to welcome all delegates for several years now. We plan to send at least ten delegates.
- National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Milwaukee Branch in partnership with Miller Brewing Co. is offering an Adult Learning Program for individuals who are unemployed or underemployed. Basic computer learning classes are held Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Contact the Branch for registration information at
(414) 562-1000.
- The State Education Committee sponsored a statewide educational forum February 9, 2008. Most branches in the state participated. We were fortunate to have access to Springfield College's wonderful facilities in downtown Milwaukee. The outcome was quite rewarding.
- Women in the NAACP (WIN) sponsored a "Get Acquainted Luncheon" for the community to meet Life Members of the NAACP in January. The luncheon was a huge success. Many life members are volunteering their services to the branch in areas where their services are greatly needed. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at next year's luncheon.
- The Labor and Industry Committee have teamed with the Legal Redress committee to sponsor a free Legal Clinic each Tuesday. We need more lawyers and others to volunteer to meet the needs of all the requests that we receive each week. This is a very popular service we are providing.
- We have organized a Talented Tenth Project to help us to carry out the mission of the NAACP in our Branch. The results of our efforts have been overwhelming. We were organized because we felt the need to solicit volunteers to give assistance to our young people who needed guidance and inspiration to achieve. We knew we did not have all of the resources we needed to do an effective job. We do know that we know many people who have made great achievements in our community. We decided to use the principles utilized by one of our founders W.E.B Du Bois...Read More >>
