The Talented Tenth Project of the Milwaukee Branch NAACP

The purpose of the Talented Tenth Project is to awaken this community and its members to the fact that we have enough talented and educated people in our community to change our community in a positive way. We can effect change. The change that we can effect through volunteer service can lead to greater employment, acceptance, inspiration to achieve and learn and greater hope for individuals.

"The Talented Tenth" is a concept conceived by W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the founders of the NAACP. He characterized the "Talented Tenth as the 10% of the population who had been trained or educated. The remainder of the population would have to be educated by those who had the opportunity or the inspiration to become educated."

In the words of "W.E.B. Du Bois "All races are going to be saved by its exceptional men." The problem of education must begin with the "Talented Tenth; it is the problem of developing the Best of the race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the Worst. Men must be trained how to develop as men and not objects just to make money. The object of true education is to stress a curriculum of knowledge of the world and of the relation of man to it. This can be done best by men who have been trained." The Negro Problem W.E.B. Du Bois, A Collection of Articles by African Americans (New York: James A. Potts Company, 1903)

Our Mission: Our mission is to further the mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The members would commit to sharing talents, time, and resources to improve the training and educational level of people in our area. They will support the Milwaukee Branch in carrying out its agenda.

We will adopt the Talented Tenth philosophy. In doing so, we seek to encourage those who have achieved the most in inspire others to achieve more. We attain grater benefit from the legacy of the people whose sacrifices have improved our lives. We also learn to decrease undesirable habits that keep us from moving forward. According to W.E.B. Du Bois, those who have excelled in any fashion have three tasks before them:
  1. Show that you are worthy of the leadership position you have attained.
  2. Show how other may be educated and developed.
  3. Show others how they have a relationship to the problems that have faced us all.
The Talented Tenth Project will be open to all Life Members of the NAACP who are willing to volunteer two hours per month to any non-profit organization. Our goal for 2008 is 500 members. Each year we shall present an award to the individual or organizations that have been most productive in developing the skills of others. This shall be determined by the amount of time devoted to the task. On this website please find an application for membership for those people ho have made strides to become self-sufficient and who are willing to help others to develop those skills as well.
